Final Diagnosis For Which Treatment Was Sought Including Patient's Actual Condition
5-year-old female, with a cardiac transplant history, was admitted by her PCP to Sacred Heart Hospital (SHH) for evaluation of fever, recent diarrhea with weight loss and enlarged nodes.CT scan noted significant lymphadenopathy suggesting high likelihood of post transplant lymphoproliferative disorder (PTLD).Dr. Assanasen was consulted.He reviewed the CT scan, spoke with the radiologist, and contacted the patient¿s transplant cardiologist located in Atlanta.Dr. Assanasen recommended an urgent diagnostic biopsy and the transplant specialist concurred that the biopsy could be done at SHH.
Operation, Diagnostic, Or Treatment Procedure Rendered Causing The Injury
A laparoscopic biopsy was undertaken on May 5, 2007.The patient became hypotensive and had cessation of cardiac function at the close of the biopsy procedure as the drapes were being removed.Code sequence followed.Patient was resuscitated, but suffered a neurologic injury and was transferred to Atlanta where she subsequently expired several days later.
