Patient presented to ED via ambulance complaining of shortness of breath & severe cramping in legs for 24 - 36 hours.
Operation, Diagnostic, Or Treatment Procedure Rendered Causing The Injury
Insured physician ordered lab tests: CBC, urinalysis, Chem 8, ABG. Patient immediately given brain naturiuretic peptide & 2 ltrs normal saline bolus as well as a second IV of 1/2 normal saline upon his arrival. Working diagnosis was diabetic Ketoacidosis and Supraventricular Tachychardia. ABG results showed patient has critical PH level at 6.94, but Insured could not administer insulin until results of blood tests indicating potassium level were received.

When ABG results arrived, patient's blood sugar level was 353, which nurse reported to Insured physician. Orders written for admin of adenosine & sodium bicarbonate; patient given insulin & potassium after remining test results came in. Insured ordered patient to be admitted to hospital.
Principal Injury Giving Rise To The Claim
Patient finally admitted to ICU several hours later when bed became available. Plaintiff alleges Insured physician failed to administer medication quickly enough which resulted in patient's death.
Severity Of Injury
Permanent: Death.
