Ms. Comparato's presented to Sarasota Memorial Hospital's ED on 04/09/14 for a chief complaint of abdominal pain. Dr. William's initial clinical assessment of diverticulitis and the evaluation to include abdominal CT with contrast. The radiologist found a hyper-enhancing mass in the posterior aspect of hepatic segment VIII measuring 2.5 x 2.1 cm suspicious for hepatocellular carcinoma.Dr. Williams immediately recommended that plaintiff follow up with a GI specialist. The following day, the plaintiff followed up with a GI specialist. The patient was diagnosed 10 months later with a metastic carcinoma of the liver. Plaintiff alleges that Dr. Williams should have had a physician to physician contact with the subseqent GI physician in addition to forwarding the ED records. Both Dr. Williams and the GI specialist, however, were part of the same health-care system. As such, the ED records were readily available to the subsequent specialist.
