Diagnostic Code :
Misdiagnosis Made, If Any, Of Patient's Actual Condition
Upon presentation to the emergency department patient was noted to be experiencing signs and symptoms of a stroke. A non-contrast-enhanced CT of the brain was ordered to rule out CVA. Our insured, a radiologist, interpreted the non-contrast-enhanced CT scan finding no definite abnormality but some small low-density foci in right pons which may be artifactual. Our insured recommended patient undergo an MRI which was later performed. Patient ultimately suffered a pontine infarct associated with a potential vertebrobasilar resulting in the patient suffering from alocked-in syndrome. The allegations against our insured are: failure to recognize a thrombosis of the vertebro basilar artery on the non-contrast-enhanced CT scan of the brain on July 8, 2005. The case was settled for economic reasons, we were prepared to defend the case and had supporting experts.
Principal Injury Giving Rise To The Claim
