Acute left hip fracture.
Operation, Diagnostic, Or Treatment Procedure Rendered Causing The Injury
Patient was admitted on 11/19/07, with diagnosis acute left hip fracture. Upon admission he was identified to be at risk for fall & placed on fall precaution. On 11/20/07, patient underwent ORIF of left hip. He returned to his room at 1900. Subsequent fall assessments placed him at standard safety precaution. At shift change 1900 patient kept saying his operative leg felt really good. He was instructed by nursing not to get out of bed, to call nursing for any assistance & he voiced understanding. At 2320 he was given 1mg Dilaudid IM for pain. Throughout night nurse did reassessments for pain, took vital signs, offered snacks/liquids. Nurse was at nursing station & heard a noise at 0155 on 11/21/07, she went into patient's room & found him sitting on the floor next to his bed. He had complaints of right hip pain. Physician was notified & ordered bilateral hip x-rays. Left hip was anatomical position, but right hip was positive for acute right hip fracture. Patient returned to surgery on 11/21/07, for ORIF right hip under general anesthesia.
