Diagnostic Information

Final Diagnosis For Which Treatment Was Sought Including Patient's Actual Condition
The patient was admitted to the hospital for surgery for septoplasty (surgical procedure to correct the nasal septum,) submucous resection, and tonsillectomy. There were no complications in surgery. The patient was taken to the recovery room. The doctor had ordered fentanyl patch and morphine.
Operation, Diagnostic, Or Treatment Procedure Rendered Causing The Injury
The insured nurse's shift began at 7am. The patient complained of pain and difficulty when swallowing. The insured nurse administered morphine. The patient requested a pill to sleep and she gave the patient a sleeping pill at midnight. At 4am the patient was awake, and at 6am blood work was done. At 6:40am the insured nurse noted that the patient was asleep, despite trying to rouse him. The insured nurse's hift ended at 7am. At 8:30am the patient was given morhinen and at 10:45am the physician ordered the discharge. The nurse on that shift noted the patient was ambulating and bathed himself. The patient was discharged, but the following morning he was found unresponsive and was tken to the hospital via ambulance where he was pronounced.
