The patient was admitted for a microlaminectomy and diskectomy of L4-5.
Operation, Diagnostic, Or Treatment Procedure Rendered Causing The Injury
The patient underwent a microlaminectomy and diskectomy of L4-5.In the recovery room, the patient complained of right leg numbness and pain.A stat angiogram indicated an arteriovenous fistula causing shunting of the blood from the leg into the inferior vena cava.The following day, the patient was returned to surgery where revascularization of the leg and repair of the vein were done.

Vicarious liability for alleged failure to diagnose ischemic leg.
Principal Injury Giving Rise To The Claim
Postoperatively, the patient sustained a retroperitoneal hematoma, basilar infiltrates, and hydronephrosis requiring a cystoscopy, retrograde ureterogram and placement of a right ureteral stent.The patient also developed a left leg DVT and a superficial dehiscence of the right groin.The patient developed abscesses, which were drained, and then was found to have a staphylococcal bacteremia.
Severity Of Injury
Temporary: Major - Burns, surgical material left, drug side effect, brain damage.Recovery delayed.
