Final Diagnosis For Which Treatment Was Sought Including Patient's Actual Condition
Eosinophilic syndrome.
Operation, Diagnostic, Or Treatment Procedure Rendered Causing The Injury
Allegations of failure to diagnose Eosinophilic syndrome. On 9/17/04, patient was seen in physician's office complaining of general malaise & joint pain which was believed to represent a mild neuro-muscular problem. Physician prescribed Mobic & Skelaxin & sent her home with instructions to return if needed. The next day she developed a rash & notified physician's office. Believing patient was having an allergic reaction to medications, physician took her off Mobic & Skelaxin & prescribed a Medrol Dose Pack. The following day patient was feeling sicker, was short of breath, & presented to JFK Medical Center where she was seen by the ER physician.Patient had some cardiac symptoms & EKG findings. She was treated in the ER & admitted to the hospital. It was thought that patient had a vasculitis or other immune problem that involved a myocarditis.Patient's white blood count revealed thrombocytopenia & high eosinophils.Patient was started on high dose steroids.Physician brought in hematologist who agreed with treatment plan. After two days on IV steroids, patient stated she was feeling better & wanted to go home.Thrombocytopenia improved, however, eosinophils were continuing to trend upwards.During hospital course, echocardiogram was performed & interpreted as normal.Physicians decided to send patient home on 9/22/04, on oral high dose steroids.Patient followed up with physician on 9/24/04, & reported feeling slightly worse than when she was discharged.Physician increased dosage of patient's oral steroids. On 9/26/04, patient returned to the hospital by ambulance in critical condition. She was suffering multi-organ failure. Eosinophils were extraordinarily high & a echocardiogram showed left ventricle was obliterated by an infiltrative process. Patient expired on 9/25/04.
