PATIENT HAD A SUBTOTAL COLECTOMY SECONDARY TO COLON CANCER. POST OPERATIVELY HE DEVELOPED ATRIAL FIBRILLATION AND RAPID VENTRICULAR RESPONSE IN THE PACU. THE PHYSICIAN ORDERED THE PT TO RECEIVE BETA BLOCKERS AND LOVENOX EVERY 12 HOURS.
Operation, Diagnostic, Or Treatment Procedure Rendered Causing The Injury
LOVENOX WAS ORDERED TO BE GIVEN EVERY 12 HOURS AT 9 AM AND 9 PM. HOWEVER THE FIRST DOSE WAS GIVEN WHEN IT WAS FIRST ORDERED AT 3 PM. NURSE BUTLER DID NOT REVIEW THE CHART AND GAVE A DOSE AT 9 PM WHICH WAS ONLY 6 HOURS AFTER THE FIRST DOSE.

IT IS ALLEGED THAT THE LOVENOX, GIVEN TOO SOON AFTER THE FIRST DOSE, CAUSE A RETROPERITONEAL BLEED. THIS RESULTED IN ADDITIONAL COMPLICATIONS INCLUDING THE NEED TO DO A SPLENECTOMY. THE PATIENT HAD A LONG COURSE OF RECOVERY WHICH INCLUDED FREQUENT INFECTIONS AND PNEUMONIA.
