Alleged unnecessary valve replacement; negligent performance of aortic valve replacement surgery and alleged negligent treatment of postoperative complications. Expert review supported the need for aortic valve replacement; the physician's initial choice of valve size; the decision to perform an aortic root enlargement and placement of a larger valve. The patient unfortunately had a rocky postoperative course during which she sustained an MI and developed heart failure. Despite maximum support, she progressed to multi-system organ failure and was removed from life support at the request of the family. The case was settled to avoid an adverse outcome at trial in a medically complex matter situated in a plaintiff-oriented venue and involving a sympathetic plaintiff.
